TELL ME A STORY

When I walked into Aimee’s living room I immediately appreciated the masterful way she assembled the various layers and textures of her tree. She definitely has a keen sense for how a tree should be presented to the world. As is her tradition, she adorned the tree with her favorite golden and glass ornaments, of various shapes and sizes but uniform in their color tones. This year, however, she told a new story. While picking broomcorn with her young children on her grandfather’s acreage this past autumn, she was inspired to bring bunches of this native sorghum home for her tree, to bring something special from his farming roots into her holiday storytelling. She dried the stalks, spray-painted them a light metallic so that they would hold their form, tied them off with twine, and lay them in bunches between the branches of her tree, on her mantel, and in her holiday arrangements. It was the perfect way to re-create her tradition of capturing a natural look by wrapping grapevine branches around the outside of her tree after all the ornaments are in place. The broomcorn gives the tree depth and reminds her daily of this important person in her life.
